Christmas Trees

If you still need to get your Christmas tree, consider the local family-owned tree farm in south Salem, 4GEN Farms. This tree farm is beautifully located in south Salem amongst rolling vineyard hills within a rich country landscape. 4GEN Farms is unique in that they donate 25% of their profits to 1 of the participating charities of your choosing. The farm is dog-friendly so you can bring your entire family, just make sure your pup plays well with others. There is also a small gift shop with some of my designs, my best friend's freshly canned salsa verde, and more. Please see their website for more information. Merry Christmas!

Heritage Holiday Faire - Nov. 2011

The Heritage Holiday Faire is this coming weekend, and I am ready a week ahead of schedule. My mock set-up is pretty much ready, everything is priced, my online shop is closed, and now I just need to pack up and have fun making my jewelry boxes out of cigar boxes. I have 2 done so far and they are too cute, Jane Austen inspired, and it feels good to repurpose something!

The Heritage Holiday Faire starts Friday, November 18th from 5pm – 8pm, $7 admission. The Faire is open Saturday from 10am – 6pm, free admission; and Sunday from 10am – 3pm, free admission. There will be horse rides for kids, freshly popped kettle corn for sale, a Café for lunch, sweet treats, and coffee drinks, and of coarse gobs of holiday gifts and décor. It’s going to be in the spinning room at the Mission Mill, Salem Oregon. This year there are 40 fabulous vendors, including Vintage Chick Designs, and I’m sure it will put me in the holiday spirit~

Tuesday

Halloween Bunco

My mom turned 59 years old on Halloween and we celebrated by having a Bunco party. We had Quiznos, side salads, deviled eggs that looked like eye balls, and grave yard cupcakes. My 5 year old daughter helped me add glitter to twigs and make black tissue paper flowers for this fun pumpkin tree. Hope you all had a Happy Halloween.

Friday

November show

I've got good news and bad news. The bad news is that I didn't get into the Crafty Wonderland show in Portland. The good news is that I got into the Heritage Holiday Faire in Salem at the Mission Mill Museum. I only have 34 days from now to get ready. It's exciting but I'm anxious because there's a lot for me to do. Hope you can check out the show, should be some great early holiday shopping or at the very least quite inspiring!

Saturday

Simply Chic Paper Goods - Portland Oregon

Simply Chic Paper Goods is owned by a local Portland artist, Jenn. This Etsy shop is up and coming and she continues to add beautiful designs often. Her products are very affordable, absolutely high quality craftsmanship, and they are safely packaged and shipped expediently~ Jenn is wonderful to work with on custom orders, she pays attention to details, and anticipates ideas and decisions about the design that as a customer you may not consider. I love the birthday invitations I ordered and will shop with her again. Check out what she has to offer, you will be delighted by the stunning yet simple and witty designs she creates.

Monday

What's next?

I must admit I feel a bit like a child after Christmas, after all the work and preparations I’m sad now that the Deepwood show is over. The venue was so perfect, and the ambience was amazing, I hope to get in next year. Check out Vintage Chick Designs on Facebook to see some photos.

So what’s next? Well now I have 3 months to prepare for the Portland Oregon Crafty Wonderland Show at the Convention Center. The story behind Crafty Wonderland is so inspiring and the show keeps growing and getting better each year. I should find out in October if I was accepted, and my fingers are crossed. My friend Kathleen who owns Mata Hari Jewelry is also applying and creates gorgeous neo-victorian designs and more.

Thursday

The show is tomorrow!!!!!

Wow, things have been busy and now the show is tomorrow! I'm so excited and can't wait to set up shop. As well as preparing and planning for the show, I applied for and got a new job, did a photo shoot, did a book layout using MyPublisher, got my sweet daughter ready and off to Kindergarten, and maintained my online sales. Whew, glad this show is here so things can slow down some~

It's been wonderful though and I have all the support I need from my amazing husband and encouraging daughter. Great friends and family have also encouraged and supported my efforts and business plans, wow I am blessed. I hope to see locals at the Deepwood Estates show Sept. 16 & 17, it's going to be an amazing Vintage Flea Market!

First Day

Today is the first day of Kindergarten for Sawyer, my amazing 5 year old daughter. She is so excited and more than ready to start class. Today is also the first day in my new job back with the Workers' Compensation Division and I'm also more than ready to dig in. I'm very excited to learn and get started, and the best part is the great support and patience I have with my team. I developed some lasting friendships in OSHA and God has taught me a lot about myself so I'm thankful for that experience. It's time for the next chapter and a lot has changed for Jeremy and I in a short amount of time but we're excited about the new adventures on the horizon. The excitement isn't without sadness though, we will miss Sawyer's pre-school teacher Donna at Peoples' Church, and we have missed our old church over the last year too.

I offer a huge thank you to the friends and family who have always been constant through it all. Love you and thanks so much for being in our lives.

Sunday

Mock Set-up for the Deepwood show

This weekend we enjoyed the nice weather but I also set up my display to make sure I have everything I'm going to need. At this point everything is priced, and situated but I still have 2 more pairs of earrings to finish and 7 Austen necklaces to make. Then I'll pack up everything and look forward to the show Sept. 16 & 17.

F-a-b-u-l-o-u-s

The photo shoot was so much fun. All of my models looked absolutely beautiful! I picked this photo for the booth banner and my design book. I have a little more work to do on it in PhotoShop, but you can see what counts now.

Thanks to all the ladies (Kathleen, Meghan, Angela, Kathy, Ana, Anne, Kara, Nameun, and Kay)! You look amazing and made my new enameled designs look pretty good too. I appreciate all your love, encouragement, and support over the years.

$5 French Market

I have found an Etsy shop that creates amazing handcrafted French inspired tags, gifts, and more. Every listing in the shop is an affordable $5. By the time I buy the paper, stamps, ribbon, and glitter I’m way over $5 and out of time. This shop’s concept is amazing to me and the creativity involved is above and beyond. I just love that anyone can afford these handcrafted goodies with so much style. $5 French Market is definitely worth checking out, admiring, and finding a lovely goodie you can’t live without.

Monday

strike a post

In a week I’ll be having a photo shoot! I’m really excited and hope it turns out how I’m picturing it. The photo shoot is of 9 special ladies who have encouraged and supported me in my jewelry business. They will be wearing earrings and necklaces from my collection and I’ll be using the photo to create a large vinyl banner for my display and the cover of my designs book (created with MyPublisher). My plan is to take tons of pictures in a short amount of time so that I have several to choose from. Everyone will get to approve the final selection, and then I’ll get to play with PhotoShop to process it. I was inspired to do this after doing a show in the Sellwood district of Portland, Oregon. I met a fabulous crafter there, owner of Hortense and Eloise, and she had a beautiful vertically hanging vinyl banner as her backdrop. It added so much professionalism and it was so eye catching that it stayed in my mind. The designer is very creative and specializes in vintage inspired stuffed bears and bunnies, and children’s aprons. She also has a knack for jewelry design and fixing up old homes; she's multi-talented. She is so funny and sweet, the type of person you could talk to for hours and I wish her all the success and fortune possible. Check out her shop, Christmas is coming up and her prices are fantastic.

Plans, plans, and more plans

It seems like I’m always planning something, big or small makes no difference; my mind is always thinking up something and the planning commences. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned over the last year though is to not invest too much into my own plans. I’ve come to realize time and time again in my life and through others’ lives that our plans aren’t always the best. God has bigger and brighter plans for us in His timing and His will. I had an inteview today for a position that looks really good, I know I could do a great job, and I’m ready for a change, but this time I’m not going to be so invested in case it’s not God’s plan for me. I will be dissapointed of coarse, but I’m not resolved to thinking it’s the only direction I could go. If I’m not offered the job it’s for a reason bigger than I can conceive. So I’m going to do my best in the interview, learn more about myself through the experience, and wait to see what God wants to do with it. As I’m faced with a possible change, I’m content with whatever direction I’m taken.

Arts Festival in the Forest

If you’re looking for a free event with art, food, culture, entertainment, and more; check out Arts Festival in the Forest. It’s happening August 13 & 14, 10am – 5pm at the Mary S. Young Park in West Linn, Oregon. Photographer Jason Jantzi will be exhibiting his work. He has a talented eye for capturing images and he offers a wide selection. You can also visit his site or Facebook page to follow his work. I think the weather is going to be perfect for such an event, and it’s family friendly!

Wednesday

the BIG picture

I’m busy, you’re busy, we’re all busy, right? But that’s why we need to keep the ‘big picture’ in mind. This last weekend was really nice. The weather was lovely and after a Friday night wedding the weekend was pretty open. Saturday was a low-key day, spent some time with my family and some time working off my checklist. Sunday was a full day of family fun and I enjoyed every minute. I often feel anxious about all the things I’m not getting done or need to do but I allowed myself to enjoy the present company and this precious time we had together. So while day to day I’m going through life (small picture), I don’t want to lose sight of the ‘big picture’, my purpose, and what I hold dearest to my heart, God and my family. My husband, daughter, and I drove up to Portland and grabbed delicious snacks at Coffee People (best banana shakes ever) and then we headed for Multnomah Falls. Apparently everyone had the same good idea, but we entered in a round about way and found a good parking spot and hiked a bit up to the fall. It was so much fun and we loved watching our 5 year old hike the path and act all grown up (pumping her arms for the exercise). Then we stopped in Troutdale to have Subway before going over to Blue Lake. Again, everyone had the same idea but it wasn’t congested and Sawyer loved the water feature and playing in the lake. After her lips turned as blue as the lake she was done and slept well on the drive home. The whole day was so nice and I hope a lasting memory for our daughter. She’s starting Kindergarten this fall but before I know it she’ll be graduating high school so I don’t want to miss out or regret time spent elsewhere. I’m trying to keep the big picture in mind every day.

Tuesday

Organization or Vexation

People that know me even just a little, can sense that I’m an organized person. Some may call it OCD, but I can’t seem to be disorganized so why fight it. This summer has been busier than expected and I have several things in the hopper. Some of the things I do to stay on track and meet my goals are: posting deadlines, tasks, and reminders in my Outlook calendar; keeping an orderly to-do list with due dates and details; communicate my goals and deadlines with loved ones so they don’t schedule impromptu events on me; and lastly I try to do something each day to work towards my goals even if it’s not enough to check something off my list. My husband is truly amazed by my extensive checklists, he’d be more amazed if he read the detail involved but I spare him and accept the general compliment. The truth is, I can’t enjoy planning or preparing for something if I don’t feel organized about it. Once I get my thoughts down on paper and do the logistical part of planning, I can really enjoy the fun creative parts. I start big; who, what, where, when, how, etc. and then drill down into each and so on. And because my money doesn’t grown on trees, I have to take that into consideration also and plan ahead so that I don’t break the bank when buying items for an event. I often daydream about how much I could get done if I wasn’t at work all day. So when I am at home I want to make the most of my time and not miss out on life. Once my daughter goes to bed, and my husband gets on his laptop to work, I get to work also and use my 2 hours before bedtime the best that I can. It’s much easier to get started by referring to my ready checklists and digging in, all the decisions and planning has been done so I don’t have to waste time contemplating the details when it’s time to have fun creating them.

Monday

Obsessed with burlap

Okay, I'm never really obsessed with anything (except for Pride & Prejudice) but I have been loving the look of burlap. As I prepare for the Deepwood Estates Vintage Flea Market show in September I've decided to revamp my canopy display. I can fit 3 six foot tables in a 'U' shape under the canopy and I want each tablecloth to have burlap on it in some way. My sewing skills are less than mediocre but they're doable so I started out by flipping my table upside-down and traced the burlap to make a fitted tablecloth. It's not perfect but burlap is very forgiving and the best part of it was that my 5 year old daughter helped with every step. Each year I look forward to the projects we can do together. So the fitted table cloth is a light cream burlap and it looks great. This weekend I finished the second table. I used the standard brown burlap to pleat around the edge of a door. There are only pleats in the front but the burlap covers all the sides of the table. There's even a ruffle so that I didn't have to cut the dusty burlap. I hammered upholstery nails symmetrically around it, and this one also turned out great! I have a little of the brown burlap left so instead of buying more I'll make do with it for the third table. I think it would work best to sew a 6 foot piece of burlap just on the top of an existing white table cloth so that it's not completely burlap and has some shimmery polyester too. The white, browns, and cream are great neutrals with my other display pieces and I can't wait to do a mock set-up with my canopy. The curtains I sewed for the canopy will add some sophistication to the entire look. I have just over a month to finish up everything, getting ready for this large event is very exciting.

Friday

Bramblewood Fashion

I stumbled upon the Bramblewood Fashion blog and it's so cool. Ashley blogs on many things vintage and it's all very stylish. She has a lot of ads on the right-side too that are fun and good sites. I've enjoyed looking at the vintage decor and fashion stuff and as I investigated her blog more thoroughly I found an oportunity to do a giveaway through her blog. So when she returns from vacation, she'll be posting my giveaway and to enter you just have to 'Like' Vintage Chick Designs on Facebook. The necklace is so pretty, and I'm excited to mail it to the lucky recipient~ She also posted my ad on the right-side for free - so sweet of her. It's so fun to connect with other bloggers and crafty people. Check out her blog, she's young, stylish, and has some neat finds. Love it.

Wednesday

Facebook

I finally gave in and added a Facebook page for my business, Vintage Chick Designs. I love this blog but I don't make time to add to it very often and it doesn't have that many followers. So maybe Facebook will allow me to share ideas, jewelry promotions, show locations, and post pics of cool shops I find and then maybe they'll be seen by others. I will save this blog for long-winded topics or to share more details about something. So we'll see how it goes.

The cool thing about Facebook is how it grows naturally and connects you with people with similar interests. I'm really looking forwarding to mailing away freebies from my drawings of Facebook friends, and highlighting amazing Etsy artists that deserve some spotlight. Stay tuned, I have some other projects up my sleeves that I hope to blog about and maybe even inspire you to start on your closeted project.

Thursday

Ladies Luncheon – cont.

If you read about my “just because” lunch, you know that I had a blast decorating and creating goodies for it. What you don’t know is what exactly I created. For the Chinese to-go dessert boxes, I made a peanut butter rice krispy treat, bought Florentines, and made melt-in-your-mouth sugar cookies that were stacked and tied with cute baker’s string. These are some of my favorite basic treats. I really wanted to make decadent frilly desserts but lets face it, I’m not practiced, work full-time, run a side business, and most importantly I have an amazing husband and adorable daughter to spend time with above all else. So just the basics it was, and yummo.

Now for the favors, these were so fun and only time consuming because I had to make 12 all together. First I found $1 a yard muslin fabric, free cut rectangles and sewed the bags. Then I stamped them, filled them, and tied them closed with bakers string, and hand-sewed a yoyo flower attached to a pin added to the outside of the bag. Some of the contents were customized so I created name tags for each bag. I bought bird shaped chipboard, decoupaged pretty paper over it, sanded the edges for a worn look, and stamped a sepia color ink roughly around the edges too. Then I punched a hole to attach it with vintage trim and a hole for the pearl brad which connected their name to the bird. For the name, I printed their names on vellum paper and cut one end like an old-style flag shape. I attached it to the area by the wing.

I can’t remember all of the contents but here are the highlights. I used small glass baby food jars and put some crinkle paper and a teal colored bird-shaped soap and then decorated the lid and tied with vintage seam binding, a bath bomb with birds on it, homemade (not by me) lip balm and I added a wax seal of a fleur de lis to the lid, a brass bookmark with their first name stamped along the top, an adjustable ring with a bird image under resin, a homemade (not by me) mirror compact with a vintage bird/French collage image on one side, and I know I’m missing something… Anyway, it was a great to create something other than jewelry and I felt like I shared a bit of myself with each person.

Tuesday

Ladies Luncheon - April 2011

After months of planning and looking forward to honoring my closest friends and family (in this state, miss you guys- Megan, Liz, and Stephanie), my ladies luncheon is over. I had been thinking about hosting something but I didn’t want to sell anything, and there aren’t any bridal or baby showers to give yet so I decided I didn’t need a reason, “just because” was reason enough. It’s two-fold, I wanted to honor and spoil the ladies who have supported me in many ways and even encouraged me unbeknownst to them, as well as encourage and promote my sister-in-law’s new small catering company. Angela is very talented and creative, and now she’s teamed up with 2 other very talented ladies, Meghan and Amy. They have great taste, they excel in their own unique ways, and after blending their styles the food looks beautiful and tastes amazing. This luncheon was also a time for me to create the invitations, some sweet party favors (which took me months to make and fill with goodies), decorate my finally finished dining room, and make some sweet treats for their To-Go dessert boxes. I really hope my guests felt warm fuzzies after a delicious lunch and being showered with a few goodies to remind them how special they are to me.

The caterers call themselves The Farm Wives, they have a scripture to keep them focused and they don’t spread themselves too thinly because their families comes first. They came up with the menu, and I approved with no modifications. Before we sat down, we enjoyed snacking on fresh fruit kabobs with a drizzle of sweet vanilla cream sauce, and fresh farm veggies with the most amazing dip I’ve ever had (and I don’t even care about dip usually – Sawyer loved it too). The presentation was perfect and it was difficult to not eat more but I made sure to leave room for what was to come. Our lunch started with a fresh green salad using their homemade toasted sesame vinagarette, I can’t really describe how good it was and I don’t remember the exact name they used. They simotaneously served us either water or apricot lemonade. After our salad plates were licked clean~ They brought us little jars filled with homemade macaroni and cheese garnished with an heirloom tomato slice and parsley (I think it was parsley, it was green, fresh, and looked like parsley), with 2 slices of their homemade white bread. The portions were perfect, and the flavors left me wanting the recipes. They also cleared the plates and cleaned up! The Farm Wives also set up a beautiful large frame with their menu nicely displayed, a chalkboard rooster with the word “Enjoy!” written on it, and a huge boquet of astrimaria flowers in a large (pickle) jar with a ribbon (those flowers lasted weeks later with water changes). It was beautiful and looked fantastic with my set up.

My set up was so much fun. I would love to plan events for a living, and decorate homes, and coordinate weddings… but that’s a different blog. So first off, my dining room is finally done! Jeremy had it painted last year for my birthday, he hung the large mirror for me, and he listed our couch and loveseat on Craig’s list so I could get the table I wanted! I spent several weeks compiling pictures, prints, and frames to display on the walls. Sawyer even helped me! Jeremy has been nothing but helpful and positive about the dining room decorations, he is awesome! Oh and he assembled all 12 upholstered chairs! Amazing!!! (I wonder if I can get him to help me scotch guard them too~). So I used what I had to make the 3 candle centerpieces. Sawyer helped me break the twigs and wrap the burlap around the unscented candles. She also asked me if the twigs would catch on fire, but I assured her we’d arrange them out of line with the flame. I also bought some inexpensiave gauze like cream fabric and had more burlap for a layered table runner under the centerpieces. My place settings used our white square plates with a napkin, birds nest full of chocolate eggs, and fake bird with each persons name. Up above I made and hung 7 teal tissue poms (Martha Stewart poms at 90% off because the store went out of business, killer deal!). On the kitchen table with the starters, I had their party favors and Chinese to-go boxes with their homemade treats. I used some old milk bottles as vases to hold some cherry blossom branches around the favors. It was so pretty and tons of fun. I also lit every candle I had downstairs to create a warm feeling, and even though it was April it was still cold out so the candles weren’t crazy hot. My dear friend and fellow Austen fan Kathleen noticed the Pride & Prejudice score playing in the background. It was like my modern-day 2-course regency inspired luncheon, and it was perfect. My only regret was totally forgetting to introduce each guest. Many of them knew eachother but a few did not and I wish I would have remembered that courtesy (darn-it). Live and learn.

I hope my “party” will inspired you to add a few details to your next gathering. Visit back to see more of my future events and decorating ideas. I have to share my passion somewhere, even if it’s not my day job (yet). Stay tuned to hear about the contents of the party favors and dessert boxes!
